This weeks Your Nerd Side Show:
Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder recently shared that he pitched the upcoming sci-fi epic to Warner Bros. before taking it to Netflix.
Per Screen Rant, the fan-favorite director revealed that Rebel Moon originated as a film school pitch that he eventually brought to Warner Bros., seemingly after Lucasfilm passed on it as a Star Wars film. "I think in college I had said something to my professor about like, 'What about Dirty Dozen in space? Or like an ensemble movie like Seven Samurai in space.' And he's like 'that's a pretty good pitch. What about it?'" Snyder recalled. "And I was like, 'Well...' because it was one of those classes where you're supposed to pitch a movie. And then I was like, 'That is cool.' And then we did try and sell it as a video game and as a movie at Warner Brothers a couple of times. We pitched it to them. They were like 'oh.'"
Lucasfilm and Warner Bros. may have shown no interest in Rebel Moon, but the same cannot be said for Netflix. The streaming company has gone all in on Snyder's sci-fi project, greenlighting two films and a video game. The trailer for the first film, titled Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, was recently released online, offering audiences their first look at the upcoming sci-fi epic. Sofia Boutella leads Rebel Moon as Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past who will be tasked with seeking out warriors from neighboring planets after her "peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius."
Rebel Moon Part 2 Is Coming in 2024
Snyder fans won't have to wait long for Rebel Moon: Part 2: The Scargiver as Netflix has already confirmed that the follow-up will debut on its streaming service on April 19, 2024. However, while it is unknown at this time if Netflix plans on also giving Part 2: The Scargivera limited theatrical release, the streamer will be releasing multiple cuts of both parts of Rebel Moon. Snyder previously stated that Rebel Moon will initially be released as a PG-13 film "that anyone can enjoy and watch" while a more explicit, harder-edged cut strictly for adults will become available to stream at a later date on Netflix. Snyder has also teased a future director's cut of Rebel Moon, although didn't reveal when fans can expect that version to be released.
Rebel Moon Has a Stacked Cast
Rebel Moon also stars Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Anthony Hopkins, Corey Stoll, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, and Stuart Martin, among others. Ray Fisher, Ray Porter and Jenna Malone, who starred as Cyborg, Darkseid and Jenet Klyburn in Snyder's trilogy of DC Extended Universe films, will also appear in the film.
Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire debuts on Netflix on Dec. 22. A limited theatrical release is also in the works.
