The film series Mission: Impossible started almost three decades ago, with Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt managing, in fact, to complete all the missions, as impossible as they were. As the final entry is nearing its release ending, there is also the question whether this will be Hunt's final mission.
So far, Tom Cruise has defied gravity in all kinds of scenarios throughout seven films. Following the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, it was revealed that the new entry would not follow the same pattern and just add "Part Two" to the subtitle, and was renamed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. As this gives the film series an air of finality, Tom Cruise played coy during an interview with Empire when asked whether the upcoming film will wrap up the series.
Aside from the word "Final" in the subtitle, meant to resolve the events of the previous entry, the film's official synopsis seems very decisive, "Our lives are the sum of our choices," with Cruise's Ethan Hunt asking in the trailer to trust him "one last time." When asked whether this is the secret agent's final mission, Cruise didn't offer any clarification.
"You gotta see the movie," he replied, adding, "It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience." The promo interview also came with two brand-new pictures from the film, including one with Cruise trying again death-defying stunts as he hangs for dear life in the air, and one with Hayley Atwell's Grace holding onto him.

He continued to praise Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, as "an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise," promising that, "It’s Homeric."
The film's director, Christopher McQuarrie was also hesitant to confirm the franchise's end. "It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc," he teased, which does sound like a conclusion. "I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate."
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Will Continue to Impress With Shocking Stunts
On the cover for the upcoming Empire issue, Tom Cruise is holding on to the wing of a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane again, dangling at 10,000 feet. He has already broken records with his previous stunts, including the previous installment's jump off the cliff, the biggest stunt in cinema history, but director McQuarrie promised even more crazy stunts. "There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain. There would be a day in Africa — any day in Africa — where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before."
Cruise explained, "When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit."
The director teased there is something even scarier than holding on to the biplane wings, teasing an upcoming underwater maelstrom. "I truly want to puke thinking about the stress. It was intense."
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premieres in theaters on May 23.
