X-Men's Patrick Stewart Confirms Doctor Strange 2 Role

X-Men alum Sir Patrick Stewart confirmed he is, in fact, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

On Jake's Takes, Stewart was asked about the recent Multiverse of Madness trailer. "Well, I had my phone turned off as it happened, so I didn’t hear anything," he said. "It wasn’t until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses and that my PR people had sent me reactions that they had detailed and passed onto me… I actually didn’t recognize my own voice, it sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don’t know. But I was astonished, and all they saw was the back of my shoulder, and I think my earlobe, nothing else. There would have been so many connections made. But, uh, it pleased me."

Stewart played Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X in 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, and for months, rumors swirled that he'd reprise the role in Multiverse of Madness. When the first full Doctor Strange 2 trailer dropped, fans were certain they'd spotted him by way of a behind-the-back shot of a man speaking to Stephen Strange in an unmistakable voice. Stewart, however, was quick to deny it was him. "You know, people have been imitating my voice ever since I came on the stage 60 years ago," he explained. "So, I can't be held responsible for that."

In a separate conversation, Stewart said, "I don't look at a lot of social media, and that is mostly a time issue. But I must say, before bedtime on Sunday evening, I'd had plenty of communications from friends and some people I hardly knew at all, making reference to, 'Ah, is that you? Is that you? Well, of course, you know, I was just at home, waiting to watch football. So, how could it possibly have been me? So, we'll have to wait and see, won't we?"

Most recently, Stewart dodged the Professor X question altogether by asking "Who's Doctor Strange?" when probed about Multiverse of Madness.

The Doctor Strange sequel picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Homeand WandaVision, with the Multiverse and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch both playing major roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Professor X was one of a handful of characters rumored to appear, with the likes of Superior Iron Man and even Wolverine also in the conversation.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters May 6.
