'What's Armor Wars?' Don Cheadle Makes the MCU Proud and Dodges Question About His Upcoming Superhero Film

Latest Your Nerd Side with Fonseca

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is notorious for the lengths it goes to keep certain details a secret until the project is out. However, several actors in the franchise have slipped spoilers many times, but Don Cheadle proves he's great at keeping secrets, especially when it comes to his upcoming superhero film Armor Wars.

The actor debuted in the MCU in 2010's Iron Man 2, replacing Terrence Howard as James "Rhodey" Rhodes. The character has made several appearances throughout the franchise as Rhodes/ War Machine, and he was an important member in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Rhodey is an interesting and intriguing character, as his loyalty and bravery are some of his biggest assets, and, following his role in Disney+'s Secret Invasion, the character will get his feature film with the upcoming Armor Wars. However, during an appearance on the Today Show, the actor was careful not to reveal anything about the superhero movie.

Asked about updates for the upcoming Armor Wars, Cheadle jokingly asked back, "What's Armor Wars?" The actor kept his secret about the details of the film, and, when pressed for more details, he continued, "It's the line, you know, I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you." He added, "And I just met you guys, so I don't want to do that."

\Everything We Know About Armor Wars

Details about Armor Wars are scarce, but the project was officially confirmed in December 2020. Initially, the project was planned as part of Marvel Studios' Disney+ series, with Cheadle set to return as James Rhodes. Based on the comic book with the same name, the original synopsis indicated that it would continue the ideas started in the last two Iron Man films about attempting to replicate the Iron Man technology, with Rhodes set to protect Stark Industries and make sure the technology doesn't fall into the wrong hands. In September 2022, Marvel Studios announced Armor Series will switch from a series to a feature film.

Since then, little information has come out. No other cast members have been announced except for Cheadle, but there have been multiple rumors about several possible returning actors. Last year, rumors came out that James Spader's Ultron might make a comeback in the upcoming Armor Wars. The information hasn't been confirmed, but it has been speculated that Ultron program's hasn't been completely wiped out, which means Marvel could bring him back in the future. Sam Rockwell also addressed a potential return as Justin Hammer in Armor Wars, but, the same as Spader, he hasn't been confirmed to return yet.

The announcement of Ironheart following Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Riri Williams could tie into the upcoming feature film, as Riri is the only character in the MCU to have built her own iron suit, and the limited series' delay might have a connection to Armor Wars. Secret Invasion further delved into Rhodes' back story and revealed his Skrull kidnapping story, as well as his conflict with Nick Fury. Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU might also have a big impact on the upcoming superhero film, as his connection to War Machine and Ultron.

The film is not officially announced in the current Phase 5 or the upcoming Phase 6 as it doesn't have an official release date, but it hasn't been canceled, either. Fans have been expecting War Machine to step into the spotlight and away from Tony Stark's shadow for many years and the upcoming Armor Wars will be his chance to do that.
