Since he's no stranger to trolls, Hawkeye star Vincent D'Onofrio revealed his practiced strategy against the internet's hateful baiting for his Kingpin portrayal.
"I use to have trolls, I used to have trolls," D'Onofrio told. However, instead of indulging in the negative backwash, the actor decided that ignorance is the best policy. As D'Onofrio said, "I put them in a box where they don't exist and I ignored them for a long period of time. They've just kind of gone away. Every once in a while, one will show up, and I just ignore it. Because I think that there's too much going on in the world to perpetuate negative stuff. I used to get combative, and it was hurting nobody but myself."
Despite the acclaim for his Wilson Fisk/Kingpin role in Netflix's Daredevil, complaints arose against D'Onofrio's recent Hawkeye reprisal, with many taking issue with the character's seemingly superhuman strength. In response, D'Onofrio admitted that clarification was needed for disgruntled Marvel fans and confirmed that his character is Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, making the Kingpin of Hawkeye and Daredevil one and the same. "You know I learned recently, a couple of fans, they were very excited about it, they were commenting about the strength that I have," he said. "Because I'm throwing Kate [Bishop] around and stuff. But I totally forgot. I just saw a clip on Twitter of me and Charlie [Cox] fight in [Stephen] DeKnight's first [Daredevil] season."
There's a scene that we shot on an alley, in a street in Brooklyn, where I'm literally throwing Daredevil [Charlie] through the air," he continued. "Like, I'm picking him up and swinging him 15 feet into a garbage can. I do it a few times in that fight. It's no different. It's really not. So, I keep saying that it's the same Fisk that was in Daredevil. It's the same canon, but people get confused about things. I understand."
With a demise implied but not explicitly shown, Kingpin's fate was left for speculation in the final moments of Hawkeye's season finale. Not even D'Onofrio is entirely sure what the future holds for Kingpin, though he's made it clear he's open to reprising the role again.
All six episodes of Hawkeye are now streaming on Disney+.
