The newest Uncharted poster sees protagonist Nathan Drake go global and literally hang by a thread in a classic life-or death-situation.
In the IMAX poster, Tom Holland's Drake can be seen clutching a series of strapped cargo boxes Spider-Man-style as he dangles over a three-dimensional globe. Across the globe, various destinations like Manhattan, Rome and Giza are singled out, channeling the Uncharted games' adventurous nature and alluding to locales that Drake may visit. While these poses bear some resemblance to Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home posters, they also pay homage to the iconic Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception set-piece, where Drake -- after being thrown out of an airborne plane's cargo bay -- must make his way back up using similar-looking crates.
The Uncharted 3-inspired plane scene has regularly appeared across Uncharted's promotional trailers, which tease Nathan Drake and his ally/mentor Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) going in search of a lost pirate treasure. While the focus on Drake's younger self was explored during an Uncharted 3 flashback sequence, its plot seems to borrow more inspiration from 2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, with Drake seeking out the treasure to discover his older brother Sam's whereabouts. The movie also features both familiar Uncharted faces like Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) and original characters like rival treasure hunter Moncada (Antonio Banderas), as well as new set pieces like Drake battling thugs atop two pirate ships held up by helicopters.
Since Naughty Dog released the first Uncharted video game in 2007, Sony Pictures has tried to create a film adaptation but suffered repeated setbacks and delays. Wahlberg was initially considered to play Nathan Drake before getting re-cast as Sully, and -- though he was never considered -- Firefly's Nathan Fillion portrayed Drake in a well-received 2018 fan film. The Uncharted games currently stand as one of the Sony PlayStation's flagship franchises, releasing three original titles to PlayStation 3, two to PlayStation 4 and one to PlayStation Vita. Most recently, upgraded versions of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: Lost Legacy -- titled the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection -- were released to PlayStation 5, with PC versions dropping later this year.
After Uncharted, the next major theatrical video game movie will be Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April. A trailer for the film was released during the 2021 Game Awards, officially introducing Sonic to classic characters like Tails and an antagonistic Knuckles. An adaptation of the Borderlands franchise is also currently in development.
Uncharted releases in theaters Feb. 18.
