Tim Burton's Wednesday Addams Series Gets Spooky First Look

Netflix debuted the first look at Tim Burton's upcoming series, Wednesday.

Netflix released both a teaser and first look photos for its upcoming Addams Family spinoff series, Wednesday, which stars Jenny Ortega as Wednesday Addams. Wednesday is set to release sometime in 2022.

In a recent interview, Ortega discussed how her version of this "iconic" Latina character will differ from previous portrayals in popular culture. "Her humor or sass is entertaining and shocking when you're 10 years old, but as you become a teenager it's less charming," she explained. Wednesday, who is normally portrayed as 13 years old, will be in high school in the series. "I wanted to keep that likeability factor," Ortega continued, "and not let it become annoying, bratty or pretentious. I really hope to do her justice, because I know that she means a lot to people."

The main cast of Wednesday was revealed in August 2021 and will consist of Wednesday's fellow students at Nevermore Academy and the local townspeople of Jericho. Ortega will also be joined by Catherine Zeta-Jone as Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, who will both appear on the series in a guest star capacity. Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday Addams in 1991's The Addams Family and 1993's The Addams Family Values is also set to appear in a mystery role.

Created by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, Wednesday is a live-action supernatural mystery series directed by Burton that follows the eponymous Wednesday through her years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Consisting of eight episodes, Wednesday will see the titular Addams as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town of Jericho and solve a 25-year-old mystery.

"We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series," said Netflix's director of original series Teddy Biaselli when Wednesday was announced. "Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deitz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy."

Originally announced in October 2020, Wednesday will serve as a spinoff to The Addams Family, which was first created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938 as a single panel comic. It has since grown exponentially into a franchise featured on the big and small screens, both in live-action and animation.

Wednesday will premiere on Netflix in Fall 2022.
