The Wheel of Time's Laia Costa is set to star in Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Atomic Monster/Blumhouse are producing the film, which has just started shooting in Ireland.
Details about the new Mummy adaptation are being kept under wraps, but the film is being written and directed by Cronin. Jason Blum and James Wan are producing under Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, joining forces with Cronin's own production company Doppelgängers. Costa joins the previously announced Jack Reynor in the film, but details about either actor's roles have not been revealed at this time. It is set for release on April 17, 2026.
Principal photography for The Mummy began in early March in Ireland and Spain. The film will be the first in the decades-spanning Mummy franchise to be distributed by New Line Cinema, with Universal Pictures usually handling the property as part of its Universal Classic Monsters banner.
Costa plays one of the Forsaken, Moghedien, in Prime Video's hit series The Wheel of Time. Her other notable roles include the titular character in the German thriller Victoria and Amaia in Alauda Ruiz de Azua's Lullaby. The Spanish actress has won several awards over the course of her career, including a Goya Award and a German Film Award, in addition to nominations at the BAFTAs and European Film Awards.

Cronin, who is taking the helm on the new Mummy adaptation, is an Irish filmmaker known for his work in the horror genre, including The Hole in the Ground and 2023's Evil Dead Rise. As the fifth installment in the Evil Dead film series, Evil Dead Rise proved to be a critical and box-office success, grossing over $147 million worldwide and establishing Cronin as an adept horror storyteller.
The Mummy Will Be Blumhouse's Latest Classic Monster Movie

Lee Cronin's The Mummy is set to hit theaters in 2026, but Blumhouse Productions recently released another spin on a classic Universal Monsters character. In January, Wolf Man hit theaters and rebooted The Wolf Man franchise with Christopher Abbot, Julia Garner and Sam Jaeger starring in the film. Ultimately, Wolf Man received mixed reviews from critics and failed to take a bite out of the box office, grossing less than $35 million against its $25 million budget.
While Wolf Man may not have been a huge success for Blumhouse, Lee Cronin's take on The Mummy seems likely to fare better. The Mummy franchise has been going strong since the 1930s, when the original series of horror films were released starring iconic horror actors like Boris Karloff, Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. Stephen Sommers led a reboot in the 90s which starred Brendan Fraser and led to its own The Scorpion King spin-off series.
The most recent entry in The Mummy franchise was 2017's reboot, which was set to take place in its own "Dark Universe", with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella starring. It received negative reviews and lost the studio a reported $60-95 million, which led to the cancelation of the cinematic universe, with Universal Pictures choosing to focus on standalone films with its classic monster characters instead.
