The Last of Us Season 3 Plans Revealed Ahead of Second Season

According to Production Bulletin, not only is the third season of The Last of Us already in the works, but it also reportedly has a production start scheduled for Summer 2025. This is particularly surprising since Season 2 of the series has yet to premiere, but it highlights HBO's confidence in the franchise. Season 2 of The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal, is currently set to premiere in Spring 2025. This could mean that production on Season 3 may begin shortly after the final episode of Season 2 airs on HBO next year.

Filming for Season 3 of The Last of Us is reported to take place in Vancouver, Canada. This could mean a return to some of the same locations used in Season 2, which was also filmed in and around Vancouver. Most of the directors who helmed episodes in the second season of The Last of Us are listed as returning, including Kate Herron, Mark Mylod, Nina Lopez-Corrado, and Stephen Williams. All of the producers from the previous two seasons of the hit series are also reportedly returning. However, none of this has been officially confirmed by HBO.

The Second Season Takes Inspiration From The Last of Us Part II

The story for Season 2 of The Last of Us will continue adapting the events of The Last of Us Part II video game, with Pascal returning as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. While plot specifics remain under wraps, the season is expected to explore the game’s darker themes and complex character arcs. Fans can also expect the introduction of new characters central to the storyline, as hinted by casting announcements. The highly anticipated season promises to deliver even more emotional depth and intense storytelling.

HBO's The Last of Us, based on the critically acclaimed video game, has become a global phenomenon, praised for its gripping post-apocalyptic storytelling, emotional depth, and stellar performances. Led by Pascal as Joel and Ramsey as Ellie, the series follows their harrowing journey across a world ravaged by a fungal infection, blending survival drama with heartfelt character arcs. Season 1 was a massive hit, earning critical acclaim and dominating streaming charts. The show remains a cornerstone of HBO's lineup, drawing comparisons to Game of Thrones in terms of cultural impact and fan engagement.

Although HBO has yet to publicly confirm their plans for Season 3 of The Last of Us, they have previously stated that the adaptation of the second game will span multiple seasons to fully explore its expansive narrative.
