The official trailer for The Boys Season 3 is finally out.
Beforehand, the Prime Video series posted a retro movie poster featuring newcomer Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and the supe team Payback, with the promise that the Season 3 trailer would release the following Monday. Now, the trailer has landed online, showing Payback in action and revealing new details about what fans can expect in the upcoming season.
The trailer features Homelander taking part in a number of interviews, doing damage control in the aftermath of Stormfront's attack at the end of Season 2. But as audiences hear in the clip, it's clear there's something wrong with Homelander. To fight the increasingly unhinged leader of The Seven, Butcher takes drastic measures, turning himself into a Supe. However, Homelander isn't the only problem this season, being that Vought's first superhero and Payback's leader, Soldier Boy, gets unleashed in the new footage.
Payback is The Boys twist on Marvel's Avengers, with heroes like Soldier Boy and the Crimson Countess in place of Captain America and Scarlet Witch, respectively. For those unfamiliar, the show provides a different take on the typical superhero genre, imagining what superheroes might be like if they behaved similar to entitled celebrities with corporate backing rather than altruistic do-gooders. To challenge these "supes" and keep them from going too far with their actions, a group known as "The Boys" works to put an end to the Vought International company and its premier super team, the Seven.
Prior to the official trailer, the only footage released for The Boys Season 3 was a teaser that the show unveiled during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in March 2022. The teaser gave glimpses of musical numbers, new characters -- like Soldier Boy, Crimson Countess (Laurie Holden) and Supersonic (Miles Gaston Villanueva) -- and plenty of hardcore, bloody violence. A major revelation was that The Boys' leader, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), will have superpowers similar to Homelander (Antony Starr), the series' Superman-like character and primary antagonist aside from Vought.
The Boys is one of Prime Video's most popular shows and earned itself five nominations for the 2021 Emmy Awards, including Best Drama Series alongside contenders like The Crownand This Is Us. It adapts and builds off of the original comic series created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson for WildStorm Productions and later published by Dynamite Entertainment.
Fans can binge-watch the entire first two seasons of The Boys on Prime Video in preparation of Season 3, as well the show's animated spinoff, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which includes three episodes that are canon to the main show. There is also the Vought News Network's Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman, a series of monthly news broadcasts that bridge the gap between Seasons 2 and 3 with updates on supes, possible plot point teases and more. All episodes of Seven on 7 are available online, with Cameron Coleman (Matthew Edison) set to return in the upcoming season.
The Boys Season 3 begins streaming June 3 on Prime Video.
