Garth Ennis' infamous Crossed comic book series is finally moving forward with its long-awaited feature film adaptation.
Per Upcoming Horror Movies, The Sadness writer and director Rob Jabbaz has officially signed on to direct the hotly anticipated and highly controversial live-action adaptation of Crossed. The film is currently expected to begin filming in March, with Jabbaz directing from a script written by original series creator and fan-favorite comic book scribe Garth Ennis alongside original series artist Jacen Burrows. Six Studios, Retro Entertainment, and Nightsky Productions are producing the film, although currently no details are available regarding its leading or featured cast.
Jabbaz said of the project, "It has been a real delight working with Garth Ennis and Six Studios developing Crossed for the big screen." He continued, "From day one, our primary goal has been to deliver a faithful adaptation of the original series, along with a few new surprises. I certainly hope audiences are ready for this." Jabbaz's own 2021 Taiwanese horror sleeper hit The Sadness was heavily influenced by the Crossed comic book series, and was immediately recognized as such by fans. The film was met with largely positive reviews from critics upon its release, although its use of sexual violence was derided by some as unnecessary.
Crossed Is Getting a Live-Action Adaptation
The original Crossed comic book series written by Ennis and illustrated by Burrows debuted in 2008 via Avatar Press. The series' original ten-issue run closed out what was initially intended as the entirety of its story, though the unexpected popularity of Crossed quickly gave rise to further entries. These include two web comics, Crossed: Wish You Were Here and Crossed: Dead or Alive, as well as print followups Crossed: Family Values, Crossed 3D, Crossed: Psychopath, the latter three of which were all written by David Lapham. The longest running entry in the series, Crossed: Badlands, was published for 100 issues, bringing the total number of Crossed comics up to a whopping 249 issues.
Although none of the plot details have emerged yet to give fans an idea of what to expect, the official synopsis for the Crossed feature film explains that the film "Follows a group of survivors dealing with an apocalyptic pandemic that causes its victims to carry out their most evil thoughts." This follows the original series' premise, in which the world is besieged by a rage-inducing virus that drives those infected to carry out their absolute worst thoughts, no matter how deranged. Development on the Crossed feature film was officially greenlit back in August 2024, with Six Studios' Carl Choi noting that the script he received from Ennis was "the most faithful adaptation possible."
Crossed does not currently have a planned release date.
