This villainous new group will be voiced by a trio of comedic powerhouses, with Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker) stepping into the role of Bad Girls leader Kitty Kat, a dangerously clever snow leopard; Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Movie Film) voicing Pigtail, a brilliant Bulgarian wild boar engineer; and Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face) voicing Doom, a wry raven with a knack for deception. Released in 2022, The Bad Guys was directed by Pierre Perifel from a screenplay by Etan Cohen. Based on the children's book series of the same name by Aaron Blabey, the animated movie follows the titular criminal group of anthropomorphic animals who pretend to reform themselves as model citizens, only for their leader, Mr. Wolf, to find himself genuinely drawn to changing his ways for good. Sam Rockwell led the stellar voice cast as Mr. Wolf, with Marc Maron as safe-cracker Mr. Snake, Craig Robinson as master-of disguise Mr. Shark, Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranha, and Awkwafina as hacker Ms. Tarantula/Webs. All five actors returned to their respective roles for The Bad Guys 2.
Although not as commercially successful as past DreamWorks Animation movies like Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda, The Bad Guys was still a box office hit, grossing just over $250 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. A sequel was officially announced by DreamWorks in March 2024, with Perifel returning as director and JP Sans joining as co-director. The upcoming sequel was preceded by two Netflix television specials: The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday (2023), a prequel to the original movie set at Christmas; and The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist (2024), another prequel set at Halloween.
More DreamWorks Sequels Are on the Way
The Bad Guys 2 isn't the only sequel that fans can look forward to from DreamWorks Animation over the next few years. The animation studio has also announced Shrek 5, the long-awaited fifth installment in the beloved series, which will be released in theaters in July 2026. The Wild Robot, which wowed audiences around the world earlier this year, is also set to receive a sequel, while a third Boss Baby movie is also in development.
The Bad Guys 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 1, 2025.
