Many DC fans hope to see Wonder Woman feature prominently in the new-look DC Universe. Though there's uncertainty surrounding when Wonder Woman will appear and how often she does, one Shazam! star linked to the role admits it would be "wild" if she got to play Diana Prince.
Speaking with The Direct, Shazam! franchise star Grace Caroline Currey addressed fan castings that have her portraying Wonder Woman in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU. The Mary Marvel actor stated it was "nice" to be considered for such a significant role and is open to the idea. "That's been very nice to see people say that," Currey said. "I think getting to be in the universe at all has been such a lottery kind of feeling that I don't know if I got to come back in any capacity, that'd be wild."
Though she hasn't featured in a DC project since 2023's Shazam! follow-up, Fury of the Gods, one of the last installments in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, Currey remains a fan and cherishes her short-lived DCEU run. "Oh, gosh. I mean, I grew up watching the animated series like the 'Batman' animated series, 'Justice League,' and so getting to dive into that world, especially with DC, right? Yeah, those legends, Batman and Superman, you know," she said. "But pretty cool to get to exist in that same universe, as much as it can be, you know, with all the different worlds that we don't have with DC, and I won't get into that, but, yeah, it was, it was really fun."
Will Wonder Woman Appear in the DCU?
Wonder Woman was one of the DCEU's most popular heroes, with Gal Gadot becoming synonymous with playing Themyscira's finest. Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman became a big hit for the DCEU as the 2017 blockbuster earned a 93% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $824 million at the global box office. Though the follow-up, 1984, was far less well-received, the expectation was that Gadot would return for Wonder Woman 3. However, DC scrapped plans for another Wonder Woman film when the DCU was announced. Jenkins later claimed interest in doing a Wonder Woman threequel at DC is non-existent.
Though a live-action Wonder Woman isn't in the works, the DCU will feature Paradise Lost, an upcoming Max series chronicling the mythology and political drama of Themyscira. The show, which is based on the 2001 comic storyline, Paradise Island Lost, has been in active development since 2023. However, there have been few details about the show's progress since then, with Gunn stating that he's read some drafts regarding the project.
Meanwhile, Currey has not starred in a big-screen project since Fury of the Gods. Her next feature is the upcoming short film, Nadine. While Shazam! became a commercial and critical success, Fury of the Gods is one of the DCEU's most divisive entries. It barely made back its $125 million budget and was slammed by critics. It's unclear whether Zachary Levi's Shazam or any affiliated characters will appear in the DCU.
Fans can stream Fury of the Gods via Max.
