Superman: Legacy has been revealed to begin filming in early March, and on Superman's birthday, production is officially underway.
On Feb. 29, James Gunn took to social media to confirm filming for Superman: Legacy has officially started. The famous director, who made the switch from Marvel to DC, and in 2022, he also became DC's co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, has announced the new restart of the DC Universe with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which will kick off with the highly-anticipated Superman: Legacy. As filming kicked off, Gunn also revealed the film has a new name: SUPERMAN.
"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of our principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29," Gunn wrote alongside a photo hinting at Superman's costume showing his famous logo from under the snow, "which just happens to be - coincidentally and unplanned - Superman's birthday," the director wrote.
As for its new name, Gunn, who wrote and will direct the superhero film, continued that, "When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy.By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025." In the hashtags, he also wished Clark Kent a happy birthday.
In his Instagram Stories, the director added, "How wild is this? Today was the first day of principal photography on #Superman - Feb 29 - which happens to be Clark Kent's Birthday. Unplanned. (Photo from my iPhone on Location today).
Who Is Starring In James Gunn's SUPERMAN?
James Gunn is on a mission to give the DC Universe a makeover, and he's starting the new film with brand-new actors. David Corenswet will play the titular superhero, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan will play his romantic interest, Lois Lane.
Not long ago, James Gunn shared the first BTS photo with SUPERMAN's cast, and Brosnahan recently confirmed they've had their first table read. Other cast members include Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/ Green Lantern), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Maria Gabriela De Faria (The Engineer), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), and Terence Rosemore (Otis). So far, there's no official announcement on who will play Batman.
There aren't many details about the film's plot. However, SUPERMAN will not follow the titular superhero's origin story, but it will follow Clark Kent's early days at the Daily Planet and balancing his Kryptonian heritage. On top of that, Gunn recently dismissed the rumors that the superhero film, formerly known as Superman: Legacy, has a massive budget. The movie will also be shot in Cleveland, Superman's birthplace, and Cincinnati.
SUPERMAN will be out in theaters on July 21, 2025.
