Stranger Things EP Calls Eddie Munson's Return 'Highly Unlikely'

Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy has addressed the possibility of fan-favorite character Eddie Munson making a comeback in Season 5.

While Stranger Things Season 4 fared well with both fans and critics, many were left heartbroken after Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, died. "Oh boy, a lot of people -- a lot of people -- can't even handle the thought of a Season 5 without some excuse for Eddie presence," Levy told The Hollywood Reporter at the 2022 Emmys when asked if Stranger Things' next season would feature an Eddie flashback. "Highly unlikely. Highly unlikely. But, we hear you, world. We know. You're obsessed with Eddie. So were we."

The astronomically popular Netflix series raked in 13 Emmy nominations this year, winning five of those, including Outstanding Music Supervision and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup. As of the 2022 Emmys, Stranger Things has earned over 50 Emmy nominations, with 12 wins in total. Following the wide praise for Stranger Things Season 4, Levy was overjoyed with the public's response after the season took over three years to make, considering the several delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "We don't make Stranger Things to get Emmy nominations, and great reviews," Levy said. "It's awesome that we get those things, but we make it for the fans."

Eddie Munson Rocked Out Until the End

Elsewhere in the interview, Levy discussed Eddie's massive popularity. "This is a made-up character that got introduced in the fourth year, and the world fell in love with him," he said. "And so the way that our fans invest in the stories and the characters, that's why we do this job, it's what we dream of when we do this job."

Since the series premiered in 2016, Stranger Things has only grown in popularity. Fans frequently become attached to new characters introduced in every season, only for their souls to be crushed when the character dies on-screen. Examples of tragic deaths include Alexei, played by Alec Utgoff in Season 3, and Bob Newby, played by The Goonies actor Sean Astin in Season 2. Even though Stranger Things fans are no strangers to their favorite characters' deaths, Eddie's fate particularly caused viewers to grab the tissues, even if he died heroically after an epic guitar solo of Metallica's "Master of Puppets."
