Star Wars Outlaws Trailer Introduces the Franchise's First Open-World Game

The trailer was released during Xbox Showcase on June 11, 2023, introducing Star Wars fans to the game's protagonist, Kay Vess. Set to be the franchise's first-ever open-world game, in addition to the war between the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, the trailer features familiar Star Wars locales, plot points and characters from the galaxy's criminal underworld. This includes Han Solo frozen in carbonite, Jabba the Hutt's Rancor pit, the card game Sabacc, spice-running Pykes, commando droids and more.

A Recap of Star Wars Outlaws' Development

Until now, the name of Ubisoft's Star Wars game in development was unknown. News that Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment were working on an open-world Star Wars game first broke in Jan. 2021. Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly said then, "We’ve spent almost a year now, working to get to know them and what they want to bring to the table," continuing, "It’s fun to imagine what the team at Massive can do within Star Wars by bringing their innovative spirit and their commitment to quality."

In Dec. 2022, Massive opened up Star Wars Outlaws for playtesting in Malmö, Sweden. Ubisoft Creative Director Julian Gerighty later teased the game's arrival on Twitter, tweeting alongside an image of the Star Wars logo, "2023 is going to be huge for us. Join the adventure." Whatever this open-world adventure with Kay Vess entails, it will reportedly be like the game No Man's Sky and was made possible by Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Star Wars Outlaws Arrives After Jedi: Survivor

The reveal of Star Wars Outlaws arrives not too long after the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on April 28, 2023. Same with the prior Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019), the game follows Jedi Knight Cal Kestis as he fights against the Empire. While Survivor features cameos from fan-favorite Star Wars characters, like the bounty hunter Boba Fett, it remains to be seen who may show up in Star Wars Outlaws, as well as if there will be any lightsaber action in the game at all. The aforementioned trailer for Star Wars Outlaws is cinematic in nature, and does not show off any gameplay for fans.
