A bevy of new Star Wars movies is in production.
Announced as a part of Star Wars Celebration 2023, the trio of movies will span a time period of 5000 years, stretching across multiple eras of the galaxy far, far away. While details are still slim, one of these is already titled Dawn of the Jedi and will be directed by James Mangold. While a specific release date has yet to be revealed, Lucasfilm confirmed it was aiming for December 2025. As for the other in-development projects, Dave Filoni's Star Wars movie will act as a "climactic" event that will serve as a major crossover for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. The third movie will be helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will follow Rey, once again played by Daisy Ridley, as she attempts to establish a new Jedi order.
What Awaits at the Dawn of the Jedi?
Addressing Dawn of the Jedi, Mangold described the movie as a "Biblical epic" that examines the origins of the Force-using peacekeepers 25,000 years before any canon Star Wars story. In particular, the film will follow the first Jedi to truly harness the Force. "When I first started talking to [Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy] about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do," the filmmaker said. "And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?"
Speaking about Lucasfilm's intention with these new productions, Kennedy noted that the three movies won't be a traditional trilogy or saga but rather function as a means to expand the Star Wars universe in every direction. For example, the untitled project starring Ridley's Rey will take place 15 years after the Skywalker Saga, which concluded with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Additionally, Filoni's untitled feature film will follow the growing conflict between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic. He will work on the Star Wars project alongside producer Jon Favreau.
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is set for a December 2025 release date. The other two in-development films do not yet have release dates.
