Spider-Man’s Kid Sidekick Just Stumbled Into Marvel’s Next Great Martial Arts Competition

Spider-Boy is entering Marvel's next great martial arts tournament alongside one of his best mentors.

After following the villainous duo of Bullseye and Spider-Girl all the way from New York City to the mean streets of Madripoor, the titular hero of Spider-Boy #13 and his mentor Daredevil quickly find themselves embroiled in a secretive world of assassins and mercenaries, all of whom have their own kid sidekicks. While this would normally be the perfect opportunity for an all-out brawl, that would be entirely anathema to the proceedings at hand. Instead, Spider-Boy and Daredevil will be partaking in a martial arts tournament for the ages, and losing might just mean death.

Bailey Briggs, better known as Spider-Boy, is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Universe, with his first appearance in the pages of 2023's Spider-Man #7 by Dan Slott and Mark Bagley coming as a complete shock to every other hero involved. As a result of the Web of Life and Destiny being repaired, Bailey was effectively born into existence out of nothing whatsoever. While he came with an entire lifetime of memories, that wasn't the case for the rest of the world, leaving the young Spider-Boy on the fringes of a society that had once embraced him, at least as far as he could remember.

Following Spider-Boy's recent defeat of his malevolent creator, Madame Monstrosity, the young hero has finally been given a chance to slow down. Or rather, he would have been if it weren't for the miraculous return of the rest of the world's memories of him as a hero. As such, Bailey has once again become a favorite among New Yorkers, not to mention been given the opportunity to rejoin the life he once knew alongside the mother who had forgotten him entirely.

Makawalu Akana, aka Spider-Girl, made her Marvel Comics debut only one issue prior in the pages of Spider-Boy #12, which saw her make an unforgettable first appearance as the kid sidekick of Daredevil's longtime nemesis - Bullseye. Despite what her name might imply, this Spider-Girl has none of the usual wall-crawling or web-slinging powers that have come to be associated with similar monikers. Instead, this Spider-Girl is a mutant with superhuman reflexes and the ability to replicate any physical feat in a literal embodiment of the phrase "anything you can do, I can do better." This makes Spider-Girl an overwhelming foe in her own right, even when staring down more innately powerful opposition.

Spider-Boy #13 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
