This week's Your Nerd Side Show:
In a recent revelation, one of the writers behind Spider-Man: No Way Home shed light on a significant moment in the MCU involving the iconic wall-crawler. This centered around how Tom Holland's Spider-Man experienced his own version of an "I am Iron Man" moment, a pivotal scene that resonated deeply with fans.
Writer Chris McKenna confirmed in Spider-Man: No Way Home - The Art of the Movie that Mysterio unveiling Peter Parker's identity at the end of Far From Home, was similar to Tony Stark's reveal. McKenna emphasized that Peter's vulnerable revelation was thrust upon him involuntarily, echoing the emotional depth of Stark's declaration. McKenna noted, "When we ended the last movie, we were like, Wow, we really blew things up -- how are the next writers gonna get out of that jam? And now here we are."
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also weighed in on the topic, "We knew coming out of Far From Home that we didn’t want to shy away from the fact that his identity is now revealed. It’s out there, and that was certainly always the starting point." He said that it offered a fresh take on Spider-Man's journey and the impact it had on his loved ones.
Feige also emphasized the toll the revelation took on Ned and MJ. He articulated the thought process and the questions that drove the creative team's decisions. "More importantly, how does it affect his friends? Peter Parker can handle a lot. But when he starts to see his friends being affected by his actions unfairly, that really is emotionally draining for him,” he said.
The subsequent movie chronicled the chaos triggered by this revelation and made Peter ask Doctor Strange to cast a spell to make everyone forget his identity. However, his spell backfired and pulled villains from different universes into the MCU's timeline which led to the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, the previous incarnations of Spider-Man.
From Holland's introduction in Captain America: Civil War to Spider-Man: Homecoming his connection to Tony was consistently strong. The twist in Spider-Man's own "I am Iron Man" moment underscored the dramatic irony of his situation. Entrusted with the artificial reality system EDITH from Tony, Peter's mistake resulted in the outing of his identity. This paralleled Tony's legacy and encapsulated the complexities of heroism.
Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home are both available to own on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD
