Two-time Academy Award-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016 as the titular character in Doctor Strange. Since then, he reprised his role in another solo film in 2022 and several other joint projects, and he is confirmed to return in 2026's Avengers: Doomsday.
Cumberbatch recently addressed his role as the Sorcerer Supreme in several recent interviews, and teased that he's looking forward to working again with Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday during his appearance at the Tokyo Comic-Con, TVGroove reports. Cumberbatch also addressed his role in an appearance at the Red Sea International Film Festival and teased that his "complex" character will have "a lot more to play" in the future, per Variety.
The actor attended the event in Tokyo on Dec. 8 and opened up about his previous visit last year but also what's coming next for his character, as well as the character growth Strange has experienced so far.
"He does change, but he's also constantly dealing with the same questions: what do you sacrifice for the power you have?" the actor replied (via Google Translate). "His powers aren't given to him by some special spider or nanotechnology, they're given to him by some extremely dangerous demon or god or other dimension. As a person, I think he's growing," Cumberbatch added.
As a person, I think he's growing.
"I think he's still learning how to act for others, how to work in a team, how to trust others. He's a very complex and interesting character. He started out as a very arrogant character, and he was doing godly things as a genius neurosurgeon, and now he's doing godly things as a magician. He's growing, but he still has a lot of ongoing psychological issues that he's trying to work through."
While speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival, the actor called the superhero a "complex man motivated by a need to control everything at any cost." He added, "I am interested in seeing where these costs take him. There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting." He also added that, despite the ongoing backlash against the superhero genre, the films are "so much fun to do." The actor noted, "When they are really good, they capture the zeitgeist, speak to us and our culture. They are so much fun to do."
Avengers: Doomsday Will Reunite Many Characters
Talking about the future, Cumberbatch explained that he's "really excited" to reunite with Robert Downey Jr. on the big screen again but also the Russo brothers, who helmed 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame. "I'm really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there's going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I'm excited to see what happens next."
Robert Downey Jr.'s return came as a surprise for MCU fans when it was announced over the summer at the San Diego Comic-Con. The actor will not return as Tony Stark but as Doctor Doom. However, he's not the only familiar name coming back after Avengers: Endgame. Chris Evans, who played Steve Rogers/ Captain America since 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and passed his shield along in Endgame, will also return in Avengers: Doomsday. His role is currently under wraps, and it's unclear whether he will reprise the same character. The current Captain America, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, will also be a part of Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday comes out in theaters on May 1, 2026.
