Shawn Levy Doesn't Want His Star Wars Movie To Be 'Redundant'

Latest show:

Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, director Shawn Levy has more time to consider what to include in his upcoming Star Wars movie. While the story will take place in the famed faraway galaxy, the filmmaker does not want it to be redundant.

When the Happy Sad Confused Podcast asked what that would mean for the upcoming project, the filmmaker offered some insight. "I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question," he said. "Because there's only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me - because I don't want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie."

However, Levy assured fans that the core elements of the galactic saga would remain intact. "I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves," he continued. "And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that's Star Wars to me," he added.

Plot Details Remain Under Wraps

Although Levy has provided no plot specifics, he previously revealed that the concept he has in mind for the film will be exciting. "Jonathan Tropper is writing my Star Wars film, and we have an idea that is really exciting to us and exciting to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy and [chief creative officer] Dave Filoni," he said. "One never knows if development reaches the starting gate, but my hope is that it will. I definitely can't share anything [more]."

Levy's Star Wars movie was announced in Nov. 2022, but he had to round up other projects before starting work on the film. In Sept. 2023, the filmmaker shared his excitement about joining the franchise, describing the opportunity as a "bucket-list" moment. "Getting that call was a great day," Levy recalled. "I'm putting everything I have into it, because I love that world, and it is a privilege to get to join that galaxy."

Other Star Wars movies in development include The Mandalorian & Grogu from writer-director Jon Favreau, a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker starring Daisy Ridley as Rey. James Mangold is working on a feature film about the origins of The Force. There is a solo Lando Calrissian movie in the works, along with films from Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson, and Patty Jenkins.

Levy's Star Wars movie does not have a release window at this time.
