Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy briefly responded to rumors that he was being courted by Marvel Studios to helm its upcoming blockbuster crossover event, Avengers: Secret Wars.
Speaking with ET Canada at TIFF 2023 about his new Netflix series All The Light You Cannot See, Levy was asked about a circulating rumor stating that he was in the running to direct Secret Wars. "I read that rumor, and that’s all I’m gonna say," he said coyly. Levy isn't the first Marvel director to have his name attached to Secret Wars. Both Sam Raimi (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) have been rumored for the prestigious gig over the last year. While Raimi hasn't responded to his Secret Wars rumors, Coogler has, calling them "crazy" back in late 2022.
Shawn Levy Talks Deadpool 3
With filming on Deadpool 3 paused amid the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Levy revealed to ET Canada that they have been "working on editing" the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel. He also confirmed that Deadpool 3, like the previous two films, "is raw, audacious, very much R-rated," adding, "We went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments. The internet has proven that by revealing pictures of our shoot. Thank you, internet!"
Plot details for Deadpool 3 remain largely under wraps although Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson/Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine) have confirmed that the film features time travel. The Merc with a Mouth previously traversed the multiverse in 2018's Deadpool 2 to kill the X-Men Origins: Wolverine version of himself as well as "stop" Reynolds from starring in the DC film Green Lantern. There have also been reports that the threequel will feature plenty of Marvel cameos with Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Halle Berry (Storm), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), James Marsden (Cyclops) and Channing Tatum (Gambit) just a few of the actors rumored to appear in the movie.
What Is Secret Wars About?
Announced at 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to serve as a direct sequel to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. While plot details for the upcoming Avengerssequels remain under wraps, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange will reportedly have an antagonistic role in The Kang Dynasty. There have also been rumors stating that Jackman and Andrew Garfield will reprise their respective Marvel roles as Wolverine and Spider-Manin Secret Wars. Michael Waldron was originally hired to write the screenplay for Avengers: Secret Wars, but as of August 2023, he is reportedly no longer involved with the upcoming motion picture.
Avengers: Secret Wars is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
