Saw 11 Officially Announced, Release Date Revealed

This week's Your Nerd Side Show:

On the official Instagram page for the Saw franchise, an announcement poster was shared to reveal that Saw 11, or Saw XI, is coming to theaters next year. While teasing how "the game continues," the caption notes that the sequel will be hitting theaters on Sept. 27, 2024. That will be almost one year to the day Saw X premiered on Sept. 29 of this year. Putting the sequel on the fast track to a release just one year later is also reminiscent to when the earlier installments of the series had done this traditionally each year for the Halloween season.

Will Jigsaw Return in Saw XI?

All that has been divulged officially is that Saw XI is happening, and no other information has yet been shared. Saw X was notably a prequel that was set in between the first and second movies, and it's not known if Saw XI will pick right up at this point, potentially bringing back Tobin Bell as John Kramer once again. The character was killed off by the fourth installment, a move that the producers have now admitted regret over, but going the prequel route has allowed for Bell's Jigsaw Killer to be featured in a big way once again. The results speak for themselves, as the film is the best-reviewed of any Saw movie, and Saw X was also a box office success, earning more than $107 million worldwide against a $13 million budget.

"There’s no obvious new direction to go after this film. But I think there probably will be more Saw movies, particularly if this one is successful," Saw X director Kevin Greutert told SFX Magazine about what could be next for Saw. "I truly believe that this is the most standalone Saw film since the first one. It’s not about knowing or remembering anything about the previous films."

The Saw franchise was kicked off in 2004 with the original feature film, created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. An instant success, the horror film spawned a frnachise that saw sequels released annually every year thereafter until 2010. There were two standalone sequels, Jigsaw and Spiral, which were respectively released in 2017 and 2021.

Saw XI will be released on Sept. 27, 2024.
