Your Nerd Side Halloween Special:
Samaritan 2 is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Sylvester Stallone attached to return as producer and lead star.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer is developing a sequel to its 2022 action movie, Samaritan. Bragi F. Schut, who penned the first movie, is back to write the screenplay for the sequel. Schut will also executive produce, along with Adam Rosenberg. Stallone will return as the title character with a deal made before the SAG-AFTRA strike. His Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood will also produce the sequel. At this time, it is unknown if Julius Avery, who directed the first film, will also be returning for Samaritan 2.
Released exclusively on Prime Video on Aug. 26, 2022, Samaritan follows a young boy who is saved from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is the superhero Samaritan, who disappeared 20 years earlier after an epic battle with his archnemesis/twin brother, Nemesis. According to Amazon, Samaritan was the number-one movie on Prime Video for three consecutive weeks.
Amazon Goes All In on Superheroes
Over the last five years, Amazon has become the home of several award-winning and critically acclaimed superhero properties. The Boys, based on the Dynamite Entertainment comic book series of the same name, is arguably one of the streamer's biggest original hits, leading to a shared universe that includes spinoff series Gen V. At the time of writing, The Boys has aired three seasons with a fourth currently awaiting release. The Boys was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2021 Emmys.
Invincible, an adult animated series based on the Image Comics series, has also developed a passionate fanbase. The first season of the critically acclaimed adult animated series debuted in March 2021, following 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), the half-human son of the world's greatest superhero Omni-Man (J. K. Simmons), learning how to become a superhero after developing similar powers to his father. The second season is set to premiere on Nov. 3 while a third season remains in production.
Prime Video Gets Ahold of Batman
Prime Video will also soon become the home of three animated Batman projects: Batman: Caped Crusader, Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family. Caped Crusader, hailing from the collective minds of Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams, was previously in the works at HBO Max before being scrapped in August 2022 alongside several other DC-related projects like Batgirl. While story details for Caped Crusader remain under wraps, the upcoming cartoon is confirmed to return Batman to his noir roots, with Timm's animated short Batman: Strange Days reportedly serving as inspiration for the series' visual style.
Merry Little Batman is an animated special that follows Batman, Alfred Pennyworth and Damian Wayne in an epic adventure to save Christmas in Gotham City. The story of Merry Little Batman continues in Bat-Family, which sees Bruce, Alfred and Damian finding the balance between domestic life and their crimefighting duties. Unlike Caped Crusader, Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family will be a more light-hearted take on the titular character and his assassin son.
