RUMOR: Marvel Studios Interested in Doing Scarlet Witch Film

This week's Your Nerd Side Show:

As revealed in a post from the Scarlet Witch Updates X account, which cites insider Daniel Richtman as its source, Marvel Studios wants a Scarlet Witch project to be a movie, with the company considering WandaVision creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer as director and writer for said movie. The rumor has been picking up steam, getting covered by various outlets. Currently, however, neither Marvel nor Disney have officially confirmed this claim, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ironically, before this news about such a cinematic outing was ever shared, an excerpt from The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline confirmed Scarlet Witch died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, reading, "[Wanda] destroys Wundagore – and collapses it upon herself – ending two great threats to all of the Multiverse." Adding to the irony, Marvel Studios President and CCO Kevin Feige hinted that Wanda was still alive, cryptically commenting in 2022, "I don't know that we saw her under rubble? I saw a tower coming down and a little red flash. I don't know what that means."

Elizabeth Olsen Has Teased "Redemption" for Wanda Maximoff

Putting the spotlight on the character in question herself, Scarlet Witch's actor Elizabeth Olsen shared an interest in having Wanda's return be funnier, remarking, "We can do anything with [Scarlet Witch] now! I feel like we've done so much. Now, we can really have fun -- I feel like there's a lot more humor to be had with her. She's often the emotion of a story, and I'm curious to see what we can explore. And hopefully [we can] give her some redemption."

Subsequently, Olsen would state that she didn't miss playing Scarlet Witch, noting that she thinks it's been "almost 10 years of playing her" and she's loved it. "And I think the reason why I am not calling [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige every day with ideas is because I'm really proud of what we were able to do," she added. "I think WandaVision was a really surprising opportunity. If someone were to tell me that I'm fired from Marvel movies, I will feel proud of what we made." More recently, though, the Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran avowed that she wanted to move on from Wanda, explaining that she "just [needs] other characters in [her] life" and that there's "no longevity in one character."

The Scarlet Witch project currently does not have a release date.
