Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Thunderbolts movie will reportedly feature the return of two award-winning actors from the Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Black Widow movies.

According to Production Weekly, Emmy winner Laurence Fishburne and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz might be reprising their respective Marvel roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff in the Thunderbolts movie. Their potential involvement in the upcoming superhero team-up movie won’t be surprising at all, especially when they both have important connections to four main characters of the project. Fishburne and Weisz’s rumored Marvel return would mark their second collaboration with Marvel Studios, since both of their characters had only appeared once.

In the Ant-Man sequel, Fishburne’s Bill Foster was Hank Pym’s friend, who served as a father figure to Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr/ Ghost. As for Weisz’s Melina, she was introduced as a long-time Black Widow agent, who became Natasha and Yelena’s mother during her and the Red Guardian’s undercover mission in America. At the end of the 2021 movie, she was last seen by fans escaping with Yelena, Alexei and Antonia Dreykov/ Taskmaster, leaving Natasha to deal with the police.

Thunderbolts Movie to Begin Filming Soon

In a previous interview, Marvel vet Sebastian Stan expressed his excitement in reprising Bucky Barnes/ Winter Soldier, confirming that production on the long-delayed Thunderbolts movie will soon begin around February. "I’m excited. I’m going to go back basically in a month or so. I’ve missed it. It’s a great cast," Stan said while also addressing the franchise’s recent box office struggles. "The batting average is so high that it’s difficult to always land everything right away. It’s always been a great experience. With this one in particular, I think there’s a lot of good things."

Thunderbolts will be directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay co-written by Eric Pearson and Lee Sung Jin. The latter recently won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Directing for his work on Netflix’s Beef series. The upcoming Marvel Studios movie would have reunited Schreier and Lee with Oscar nominee Steven Yeun, who was originally slated to portray Marvel superhero Sentry. Last Jan. 3, Yeun decided to exit the project due to scheduling conflicts. Despite this, The Walking Dead alum confirmed that he would still like to star in another MCU movie in the future.

Besides Stan and John-Kamen, the film will also be led by Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/ Taskmaster, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/ US Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role. Recent reports suggested that Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman is rumored to be Marvel Studios’ top choice to replace Yeun as the MCU’s Sentry. According to Russell, the Thunderbolts will not be your average Marvel movie, teasing a "fun" and "different" story for fans.

Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025.
