'Pulled From the Comic Book': Hellboy: The Crooked Man Star Teases a Very Faithful Adaptation

Jack Kesy is playing the titular role in Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which is not connected to any of the previous films starring Ron Perlman and David Harbour. A teaser trailer was previously released showcasing Kesy in the role, but fans of the character are still waiting to see when it will arrive. In a new interview with Geek Vibes Nation, Kesy suggested that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be released in early fall, suggesting that the film's arrival will be coming up pretty soon.

"I think Fall," Kesy said when asked when the movie would be coming out. "I think early Fall. I'm not entirely sure. I think it's Fall, early Fall."

Jack Kesy Is the New Hellboy

One big difference with this new film is that it will more directly include the involvement of original Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, who co-wrote the script with Christopher Golden and director Brian Taylor. Kesy said that the film is incredibly faithful to Mignola's Crooked Mancomic book series, even going down to recreating frames from the source material. The actor also hinted that the film have more of a dark, horror tone than the previous Hellboy movies.

"It's definitely very horror," Kesy explained. "It's more faithful to Mike Mignola's comics than anything before, so Mike's very excited. You know, it's literally pulled from the comic book almost frame by frame. Outside of Bobbie Jo's character, and a couple of scenes stitched, and maybe the dialogue tweaked here and there --- because at the end of the day, it is cinema film, but it's directly pulled from the comic book, and it's grounded, it's darker, it's rated R, it's spookier, it's grimier. It's what I think Mike intended for it to be, instead of this big, kind of, whatever you want to call it."

The film also stars Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell and Leah McNamara. It's produced by Mike Richardson, Jeff Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Robert Van Norden, and Yariv Lerner.

The first live-action Hellboy movie was directed by Guillermo del Toro. Starring Ron Perlman, it was released in 2004. That film was followed by a 2008 sequel, dubbed Hellboy II: The Golden Army, with Perlman reprising the role. There were tentative plans for del Toro and Perlman to make a third installment, but that never came to be. Director Neil Marshall rebooted Hellboy in 2019 with a standalone film starring David Harbour.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man does not yet have a set release date.
