Nintendo Announced an Awesome Christmas Gift for Marvel Fans

Writer: Aaron FonsecaAaron Fonseca

Dotemu and Tribute Games are bringing Marvel Comics' Annihilation to gamers everywhere for the very first time.

On March 27, the official Dotemu YouTube page uploaded the first trailer for MARVEL Cosmic Invasion. This new beat 'em up style game will follow in the footsteps of Dotemu and Tribute Games' 2022 hit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, and features a whole host of fan-favorite playable characters ranging from Captain America to Phyla-Vell.

The trailer showcases numerous Marvel Comics icons taking on all manner of threats, the majority of which come in the form of members of the insectile alien army known as the Annihilation Wave, while faceless A.I.M. agents also make an appearance as foes to face off against. MARVEL Cosmic Invasion puts players in control of no less than seven playable characters, consisting of Captain America, Spider-Man, Venom, Storm, Wolverine, Nova, and Phyla-Vell. As seen in the trailer, each character will have their own unique set of moves, including area-of-effect attacks and explosive specials.

MARVEL Cosmic Invasion marks the first time that Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave have taken center stage in a 2D beat 'em up game. Previously, the villain has been translated for games such as 2005's Fantastic Four, Marvel Super Hero Squad, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. As per the official synopsis for MARVEL Cosmic Invasion from Dotemu, "After Annihilus has launched an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, all life hangs in the balance. Nova, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Phyla-Vell, Captain America, and many more heroes, both earth-born and cosmic, will join forces in a star-spanning brawling adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave."

While Annihilus first appeared all the way back in 1968's Fantastic Four Annual #6 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, his Annihilation Wave didn't become the kind of awe-striking threat fans know today until almost forty years after that debut. 2006 marked the first of Marvel Comics' Annihilation events, which drew nearly every single cosmic superhero the publisher has to offer into the middle of the action. In the years since, the Marvel Universe has survived three further such events, including Annihilation: Conquest in 2007, Annihilation - Scourge in 2019, and most recently The Last Annihilation in 2021.

MARVEL Cosmic Invasion is slated to arrive on PC and consoles sometime later this year.
