Nicolas Cage to Star in Amazon's Spider-Man Noir Live-Action Series

Your Nerd Side with Fonseca latest episode:

Sony's animated Spider-Verse film trilogy won't be the first and last time that Marvel fans see Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir. Amazon has announced that the acclaimed actor will star in the company's upcoming live-action series, Noir, as the 1930s-based superhero.

After confirming talks in March 2024, Cage has officially signed on to play Spider-Man Noir in Noir. According to Deadline, Noir will tell "the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero." Harry Bradbeer, the Emmy-winning director behind Fleabag and Killing Eve, is set to direct and executive produce the show's first two episodes.

The previously untitled series was first announced in February 2023 as part of a partnership between Sony and Amazon. Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) developed the series and will serve as co-showrunner alongside Oren Uziel (The Lost City), who is the head writer on the project and an executive producer. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal will also serve as executive producers on Noir.

"Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers," said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. "The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way."

Added Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, "We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character. Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters."

Who is Spider-Man Noir?

Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir first appeared in Marvel Comics' Spider-Man Noir #1, which was released in 2009 as part of its Marvel Noir Universe. This version of Peter Parker lives in a New York City suffering from the Great Depression. When a spider inside an artifact bites him, Parker sees a vision of a spider god that bestows the hero with his arachnid powers.

Spider-Man Noir made his scene-stealing film debut in the 2018 Oscar-winning animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, the Cage-voiced web-slinger was largely absent from the 2023 sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, making only a small appearance at the end of the movie. He is expected to have a larger role in the upcoming third and final Spider-Verse movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man Noir will debut first on MGM+, followed by a global release on Prime Video at a later date.
