New Transformers Missing Link Figures Homage the Series' Diaclone Roots

Two Generation 1 Autobots from the original Transformers continuity are set to receive upcoming toys that are both old and new. Ironically, one of these characters is an obscure Transformer that even most hardcore fans won't recognize.

Sunstreaker and Cordon are the latest additions to the Transformers: Missing Link toy line that combines modern engineering with the classic designs of the original Transformers toys. In fact, Cordon in particular homages the pre-Transformers roots of those toys -- a concept that's further homaged through an interesting extra addition to the new retro figures.

Sunstreaker & Cordon Represent the "Missing Link" Between Transformers and Diaclone

The new Transformers: Missing Link Sunstreaker and Cordon figures aren't mere reissues of classic toys, but nor are they entirely "modern." Instead, they add updated articulation and engineering to the general design of the original Sunstreaker action figure, with Cordon being a black and white repaint of this updated toy. As in G1, Sunstreaker and Cordon transform into Lamborghini Countach LP500S sports cars, making them just as slick and sophisticated in vehicle mode. Cordon seems to have a blaster in robot mode, whereas Sunstreaker's firearm replaces his hand, in a way. Per an image of the prototypes, they will also come with new versions of the "worker" action figures that came with the original Diaclone action figures that were re-released by Takara as the first Transformers toys.

Further homaging this classic toy line is the character Cordon, who's based on a black and white police car variant of the Diaclone mold that became Sunstreaker. Hasbro didn't utilize this color scheme in the original series, although Cordon went on to receive official toys (and a French name) through repaints of later Sunstreaker toys. It's also arguable that fellow Lamborghini Autobot Mach Alert/Prowl in Transformers: Robots in Disguise was also a reference to this, at the time, unused aesthetic. It hasn't been noted when these figures will be released or how much they'll cost, especially with Missing Link Bumblebee and Cliffjumper just now seeing a wide release for consumers. However, when they do come out, they'll be a great way to celebrate the history of the Transformers franchise -- not to mention the line that came before it.
