New Look at Joker 2 Teases Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn's Captivating Romance

Our latest show:

Though Joker: Folie à Deux blends scares and sounds, the upcoming musical psychological thriller once again proves it's a love story at heart with its latest visuals. New promotional images for the anticipated sequel tease the intense romance between Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn.

Warner Bros. released the latest poster plugging Folie à Deux, the follow-up to 2019's Joker. The image sees Arthur and Harley looking deep into each other's eyes in their familiar get-ups. The duo seem ready to make the world their stage as fans anticipate seeing Arthur and Harley's love story illustrated on screen.

Much of Folie à Deux's story centers around Arthur and Harley's love interest, which first forms while Arthur is a patient at Arkham State Hospital, where he's held two years after killing Murray Franklin on live TV. While at the asylum, Arthur meets Harleen Quinzel aka Lee, a music therapist who soon shares delusions with him as they experience musical madness and fall madly in love. While Arthur and Lee's romance develops, Arthur's followers devise a movement to help him escape Arkham.

Arthur Fleck Is Not a Traditional Joker

Though the latest Folie à Deux sees Phoenix's central character decked out in his famed clown makeup, don't expect Arthur to transform into the Clown Prince of Crime in the sequel. Director Todd Prince recently claimed Arthur won't become his nefarious alter-ego in Folie à Deux, as fans will see the more human aspects of Arthur's personality and why love was what he wanted most. Phillips told Empire, "We would never [make him the Clown Prince of Crime]. Because Arthur clearly is not a criminal mastermind. He was never that."

Meanwhile, Folie à Deux marks Stefani "Lady Gaga" Germanotta's most prominent role, having previously starred in A Star Is Born and House of Gucci. Germanotta insists she put a unique spin on Harley Quinn in the upcoming blockbuster, balancing the character's charm with her more quirky tendencies. Phoenix also credits Germanotta with helping him through the musical performances in Folie à Deux, admitting he struggled to get used to his singing voice in the movie before the legendary singer made him feel "confident."

Phoenix and Germanotta star in Folie à Deux alongside Zazie Beetz (Sophie Dumond), Harry Lawtey (Harvey Dent), Catherine Keener (Maryanne Stewart) and Brendan Gleeson. Phoenix won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in the original Joker, which stood as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever ($1.074 billion) until Deadpool & Wolverine broke the record last week.

Folie à Deux premieres at the Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 4. The sequel opens in theaters worldwide on Oct. 4.
