Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revolution Reveals First Look Teaser

This week's Your Nerd Side Show:

A teaser for the upcoming sees the mighty He-Man and his father King Randor (who wears a powerful flying armor) taking on the fearsome Scare-Glow. Not only is the neon-colored villain able to grow to gigantic size, but he also transforms into a spider-like form to face the two heroes. The clip was released for the Drop 01 event where the Netflix streaming service shows off its approaching animated content. Given that He-Man is front and center in the clip, it appears that this show will keep him in the spotlight - unlike its predecessor.

Created by Kevin Smith, the series is a sequel to Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which premiered on Netflix in 2021. Said series acted as a sequel to the original Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon from 1983, in doing so replacing the less-than-successful followup The New Adventures of He-Man in terms of continuity. Both shows have an animation style heavily inspired by Japanese anime, not unlike the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon from the year 2002. The first season was somewhat contentious, however, for how little He-Man himself was seen compared to the other characters that were focused on.

Much of the voice cast from the first season return for the new series, with a few exceptions. Melissa Benoist replaces Sarah Michelle Gellar as the voice of Teela. The voice of Hordak will be provided by Keith David, while Meg Foster - who portrayed Evil-Lyn in the live-action Masters of the Universe movie from 1987 - portrays Motherboard.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution and its predecessor aren't the only productions in the Masters of the Universe franchise created by Netflix. She-Ra and the Princesses of Powerpremiered in 2018, rebooting the literal sister series of He-Man's adventures. Conversely, Revelation was quickly followed by the release of the 2021 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe CGI animated series.

This wholesale reboot of the property ran for 26 episodes across 3 seasons and even featured Kevin Smith himself voicing the villainous Tri-Klops. It also featured iconic Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy as Hordak in the actor's final role. There was also a live-action Masters of the Universe movie planned by Netflix. Unfortunately, this project was canceled by the latter part of 2023. With the 2021 CGI series and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power now over, Revolution will be the main form of the franchise for the foreseeable future.
