Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Unveils First Trailer and Premiere Date

Your Nerd Side Halloween Specials:

Netflix's Geeked Week celebration continues with the first trailer for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Recently, Netflix had teased the 2024 arrival of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series, but an official premiere date hadn't yet been announced. For Geeked Week on Thursday, the first trailer was released along with the news that the series would premiere on Feb. 22, 2024. While several sneak peek images have been released in recent months, the new trailer dives deeper into the series by revealing the first footage. The teaser trailer can be viewed below.

Based on the animated series from Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the new Avatar: The Last Airbender was developed for Netflix by Albert Kim. Its cast of characters includes Gordon Cormier as Aang; Kiawentiio as Katara; Ian Ousley as Sokka; Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko; Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh; Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai; Ken Leung as Commander Zhao; Maria Zhang as Suki; Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula; Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue; Lim Kay Siu as Gyatso; and Danny Pudi as The Mechanist.

A Live-Action Spin on Avatar: The Last Airbender Brings Something New to the Franchise

"VFX technology has advanced to the point where a live-action version can not only faithfully translate what had been done in animation — it can bring a rich new visual dimension to a fantastic world. We’ll be able to see bending in a real and visceral way we’ve never seen before," Kim previously said in a statement, explaining his interest in pursuing the adaptation. "Also, Netflix’s format meant we had an opportunity to reimagine a story that had originally been told in self-contained half-hour episodes as an ongoing serialized narrative. That meant story points and emotional arcs we’d loved in the original could be given even more room to breathe and grow."

Kim added, "Finally, a live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans. This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in."

Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 22, 2024.
