MTG Community Has Mixed Feelings About SpongeBob Crossover

Writer's picture: Aaron FonsecaAaron Fonseca

It's one of the most surprising crossovers of the century — SpongeBob SquarePants is coming to Magic: The Gathering, a complex and often serious competitive card game. And the results are mixed. The next Secret Lair drop in MTG is SpongeBob SquarePants, bringing iconic cartoon characters like SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks and Plankton to the card game.

There will be three drops: Legends of Bikini Bottom, which features core characters from the classic Nickelodeon show, Internet Sensation, which features memes old and new, and Lands Under the Sea, which will focus on locations fans may recognize from the series like Jellyfish Fields and the Krusty Krab. The Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants collection will arrive on Mar. 24, 2025.

Magic: The Gathering Community Has Mixed Feelings About SpongeBob

Does the Porous Sponge Fit In?

Magic: The Gathering has often been lauded as a very serious and intense card game, with the most popular sets including Commander Masters and Throne of Eldraine. But MTG has expanded into some crossovers in the last few years, including popular sets featuring Lord of the Rings, Fallout and Marvel. There will also be a Star Trek: Picard set in the near future.

However, SpongeBob SquarePants is most definitely the goofiest and most light-hearted crossover yet. One popular MTG content creator called it a "nightmare" on YouTube. A player on Reddit called the crossover an "ad" instead of using unique art from MTG itself. Other serious players felt that the tone of the game was getting overrun with these crossovers and especially didn't want to see them in competitive play as often.

But other players have noted that the cards are actually pretty funny. The cards are also pretty good, offering some fun strategy. Said one fan on YouTube: "While in general I am opposed to these kind of crossovers, some of these meme cards are pretty funny. A Mr. Krabs 'I like Money' smothering tithe or a 'buff Spongebob' giant growth would have been perfect."
