Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for Disney+'s Ms. Marvel.
While Kamala Khan's powers in the comics consist of stretching, shrinking and growing, the new trailer shows the hero shooting purple cosmic energy beams, forming shields and even manifesting a giant fist in a nod to her comic book counterpart.
Ms. Marvel's updated powers were teased as early as October 2021, when merchandise featured the character constructing the aforementioned purple fist, dubbed "Crystal Smash," and the brief teaser from Disney+ Day further highlighted the character's new MCU powers.
Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie, Kamala Khan debuted in 2013's Captain Marvel #14 and was the first Muslim Marvel character to headline her own series. The character takes up the mantle of Ms. Marvel as a tribute to her idol, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.
"The fact that the show is being made and they’re including this character in the MCU is [what’s important]," Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani said in August 2021 about playing the MCU's first Muslim hero. "I don’t really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani — it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough."
Along with the trailer, Marvel released a new Ms. Marvel synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?
Ms. Marvel premieres June 8 on Disney+.
