The new Sorcerer Supreme of Earth has officially set his sights on Spider-Man ,and the Wall-Crawler doesn't even know it.
While Peter Parker faces off against the superpowered menace known as Override in "Ride Over" by writer Joe Kelly and artist Mark Buckingham, another, far more ominous villain watches on from afar. As it turns out, the new Sorcerer Supreme of Earth is in need of a champion of his own. Unfortunately, Doctor Doom has nothing but the worst in store for Spider-Man, as the hero is already fated to die fighting more than a handful of times.

Doctor Doom has been a near ever-present figure in the Marvel Universe for decades, with his first appearance taking place all the way back in 1962's Fantastic Four #5 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. While Doctor Doom has long coveted the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, he has spent the vast majority of his comic book career failing to ever actually acquire it. That was until the events of Marvel's recently concluded Blood Hunt crossover event, which saw Doctor Strange begrudgingly pass the mantle on to his old adversary in a bid to save the world from the endless night and vampire swarms that had engulfed it.
The events of "Ride Over" directly set up those of Marvel Comics' upcoming "The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" storyline. Announced back in July, "The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" is set to be written by Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland. The storyline will also feature an all-star lineup of artists including Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov. "The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" was originally revealed in Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #0 in a backup story by Joe Kelly, Emilio Laiso, and Rachelle Rosenberg, which saw Khonshu have a decidedly frustrating encounter with the infamous Cyttorak, which ended with a cutaway to Spider-Man and Spider-Boy swinging acros the New York City skyline in front of a full blood moon.
In late October, Marvel Comics released a trailer for "The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" along with some other updates on the storyline. Among these was the official solicit synopsis for Amazing Spider-Man #61, which reads, "THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN BEGIN! The world has changed, Doctor Doom is Sorcerer Supreme, but he has no plans to spend his time like his predecessor… Each year, Doctor Strange would use every ounce of his power and experience to save the world from an evil god and his scions. This year, Doom is delegating this task to… SPIDER-MAN?! The leader of Latveria has given Spider-Man a new, magic-powered suit and EIGHT EXTRA LIVES with which to save the world?! True Believer, they won’t be enough…"
