'Marvel's Most Anticipated Movie': Vin Diesel Teases MCU Return

The Groot solo movie news comes via Diesel's latest Instagram post, which also features brief updates on several other sequels to movies that Diesel has headlined, such as The Last Witch Hunter and Riddick. "Disney wants their Planet X! Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet," Diesel wrote in the caption. At this time, Marvel Studios has not announced return plans for any Guardians of the Galaxy character besides Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, who was teased to be coming back in a future MCU movie at the end of 2023's Volume 3.

The Groot comic book series from 2015 does offer some ideas as to what a solo movie featuring the extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature might look like. Writer Jeff Loveness and artist Brian Kesinger's Groot series featured an origin for the Guardians of the Galaxy member, revealing that his species, Flora colossi, had been abducting organisms from other planets, including a human girl named Hannah. After seeing Hannah, Groot realized that what they were doing was wrong, disobeying orders to save Hannah and send her back to Earth. However, for his disobedience, Groot was exiled from Planet X and forced to wander the universe alone. Many decades later, he met Rocket Raccoon and the two went on to join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

What Does the Future Hold for the Guardians of the Galaxy?

Diesel joins Pratt as being one of the few Guardians of the Galaxy cast members interested in returning to the MCU. Both Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldaña, who portray Drax and Gamora, respectively, have repeatedly stated in interviews that their time in the MCU is over, with Bautista mentioning last month that he would only return as Drax if "James Gunn called [him] and asked if [he] would do something," otherwise he "just wouldn't be interested."

The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduced a new lineup for the cosmic team, consisting of Rocket, Groot, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo, and Phyla. While a fourth Guardians movie could happen at Marvel Studios, it would be made without the involvement of Gunn, who wrote and directed the previous GotG trilogy, due to his current exclusivity contract with DC Studios.

Groot is right up there alongside The Fast Saga's Dominic Toretto as one of Diesel's most beloved movie roles. Like the GotG member, Toretto's story on the big screen also remains unfinished, with Fast & Furious 11 currently in development and planning to begin shooting this year. Fast 11 was originally envisioned as a direct follow-up to 2023's Fast X, which ended on an explosive cliffhanger.

However, following that movie's mixed reception and poor box office performance, it was reported that Universal was reworking Fast 11 to be more of a throwback to the franchise's earlier street racing days. Diesel confirmed as much last November when he shared that he wanted the next movie to "get back to real street racing, practical stunts… and a reunion of that beautiful brotherhood."

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is streaming on Disney+.
