'Look Up': James Gunn's Superman Drops First Poster, Trailer Premiere Date

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios have released the first poster for James Gunn'sSuperman. A teaser was also shared on their social media accounts, announcing thatthe official teaser trailer for the first DC Universe movie would be released on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6 a.m. PST.

The motion poster shows David Corenswet's Superman flying upwards, with the tagline reading, "Look Up." The motion poster is accompanied by a reimagined version of John Williams' classic theme from the 1978 Superman movie, seemingly confirming that this will also be the theme of Corenswet's Man of Steel. As for the teaser to the teaser trailer, not much is shown except for the Superman shield, the family crest of the House of El, which is shown carved into some steel. The only auditory clue given is the wind blowing, hinting that this could be the DCU's Fortress of Solitude. Check out the poster and teaser below.

A new Superman movie was announced by Gunn in December 2022, with the newly-appointed DC Studios head also slated to write the feature. Gunn confirmed at the time that the movie would focus on a younger version of the character, meaning that Henry Cavill would not be reprising the role from the DC Extended Universe. Gunn signed on to direct Superman, then titled Superman: Legacy, in March 2023, with casting getting underway that May.

In late June, Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were announced as the DCU's Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Additional casting announcements quickly followed, with Nicholas Hoult tapped as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent, among others.

While plot details remain largely under wraps for the highly-anticipated reboot movie, Gunn has shared that Superman will focus on the titular hero as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian roots with his human upbringing. The DCU movie will also avoid retelling the Man of Steel's origin story, instead picking up with Clark Kent already operating as the superhero in Metropolis while working at the Daily Planet. Lex Luthor is confirmed to be the main antagonist of Superman, although Gunn has strongly hinted that he won't be the only villain in the movie.

Superman Features Other DC Heroes

Superman is notable in that it will feature the DCU debuts of several other fan-favorite superheroes, such as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion. Hawkgirl, Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Rex Mason/Metamorpho, and Angela Spica/The Engineer (a member of the Authority) are also set to appear, portrayed by Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and María Gabriela de Faría, respectively. Frank Grillo is also set to reprise his role from Creature Commandos, the first project released in the DCU, as Rick Flag Sr., while Sean Gunn and Milly Alcock are expected, but not yet confirmed, to appear in the DCU movie as Maxwell Lord and Supergirl, respectively.
