David Koepp, who penned the script for 1993's Jurassic Park and its sequel, is returning to the franchise for Jurassic World Rebirth. According to the writer, the movie will feature a scene from Michael Crichton's books, on which the franchise is based, that didn't make it into the original film.

Speaking to Variety, Koepp explained that while the project does not pull a specific plot from any of the novels, parts of the source material have been included. "I reread the two novels to get myself back in that mode though. We did take some things from them," he said. "There was a sequence from the first novel that we'd always wanted in the original movie, but didn't have room for. We were like, 'Hey, we get to use that now.' But just to get back in that headspace 30 years later – is it still fun? And the answer is yes, it still really is. Dinosaurs are still fun."

Directed by Gareth Edwards, the movie is set years after the events of 2022's Jurassic World Dominion. The planet has become unlivable for dinosaurs, with a few survivors roaming remote tropical regions. "The story follows Zora Bennett who teams up with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis and team leader Duncan Kincaid to track down the three largest dinosaurs and extract their DNA, which can be used to create a life-saving drug for humans," the official synopsis reads.

"Along the way, the team meets a family whose boating trip went disastrously wrong after an encounter with aquatic dinosaurs. Stranded on a mysterious island, they all uncover a chilling secret that's been hidden from the world for decades." The cast includes Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid, Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis, and Rupert Friend as pharmaceutical representative Martin Krebs.

Jurassic World Rebirth Features an All-New Story

Koepp previously talked about what drew him back to the popular dinosaur franchise after more than two decades. "The idea of starting afresh. You don't often get that chance where they give you very few guidelines, except there must be dinosaurs in it," he explained. "Writing those first two movies [Jurassic Park and The Lost World] were some of my favorite experiences in my career so far. The combination of grand adventure and real science is right up my alley."

"And it was fun to be able to decide on a new tone, because every three movies seems like a good time to change the tone and characters in a franchise," Koepp continued. "It was great to be able to work solely with Steven [Spielberg] and make up a story and think of all new characters and all in a different tone," the veteran writer added.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be released worldwide on July 2.
