Influential comic book writer Jonathan Hickman's newest Marvel saga will reshape the universe's cosmic order. The new project, titled Imperial, hits stores this June.
Hickman teams up with artists Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello to "shatter and redesign the Marvel cosmos" with Imperial, which will be a four-part series that the publisher teases will be the foundation for more titles to come. Hickman is known for his runs on Marvel's Fantastic Four, The Avengers and The New Avengers, as well as spearheading the Dawn of Xstoryline that changed the X-Men from 2019-2021. More recently, he relaunched the Ultimate Universe for Marvel, kicking things off with a four-issue miniseries titled Ultimate Invasion.
Marvel unveiled cover art for the first issue as well as new character designs for the Imperial Hulks and Imperial Star Lord. Imperial is set to bring groundbreaking developments for the Hulks, Black Panthers, Novas, Guardians and Cosmic Kings and Queens. "Interconnected space-set stories" are teased to follow, making Imperial a must-read for Marvel fans this summer. It goes on sale June 4.

The solicit for Imperial #1 teases chaos in the cosmos of the Marvel Universe. "Imperial finds the galaxies of the Marvel Universe on the brink of major upheaval, following the elimination of several of its most prominent leaders. Nature abhors a vacuum, and empires fall, rulers are overthrown and power is seized in a saga of intrigue, mysteries and war, all taking place against the backdrop of the formation of new galactic order in the Marvel Universe."
While it remains to be seen what Marvel's new galactic order will look like, Marvel's teaser of Imperial gives a clear look at exciting new costumes for some of its characters. The character designs also come with what appear to be previews of the issue's interior artwork, with Coelle handling the Hulks' concepts, and Vicentini covering Imperial Star Lord's.
Hickman Compares Imperial to the"Ultimate" Line for Marvel Space Titles
Speaking in Marvel's announcement of Imperial, Hickman shared his excitement about getting to write a cosmic event and praised the artists working on it. "I'm very excited about this project as I’m obviously a huge fan of all things Marvel Cosmic," Hickman said. "The goal here is to kind of do what we did with the recent Ultimate line for all of our space titles, except having the setup book, Imperial, be more of an event than a world building exercise (like Ultimate Invasion). The art team is killing it, and we’re all just very excited for what’s happening in this special corner of the Marvel Universe."

Imperial's art is led by two of Marvel's groundbreaking artists, with Vicentini working on Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Coello Venom War. Both artists praised Hickman's talent, with Vicentini saying: "Working with Hickman is a great challenge. I love his scripts. He writes really brilliant dialogue and puts incredible attention to details when it comes to the story's setting."
Coello added: "Being involved in this project is incredible. Creating all these new characters and costumes is really fun. Working with Hickman is something I never expected to be able to do, and it's both cool and intimidating at the same time because of the magnitude of what he's doing in the scripts."
