Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently teased Invincible fans ahead of Season 2 of the Prime Video animated series.
Morgan sparked speculation that he was joining the show's cast by sharing a photo of him purchasing two Invincible comic book compendiums on Instagram. Notably, the compendiums are the second and third in the series, which suggests that Morgan is specifically brushing up on Invincible plot points set to be adapted post-Season 1. It's impossible to say for certain, although Morgan also thanks Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman (who serves as an executive producer on the adaptation) in the accompanying caption, which is seemingly yet another sign that he's joined the production. Despite these clues, Amazon Studios is yet to officially confirm that Morgan will lend his voice to Invincible Season 2 at this stage.
In the event that Morgan does join the animated series' cast, his comic book homework might not fully prepare him for the job. According to Kirkman, future seasons of Invincible could include new material not previously featured in the show's Image Comics source material. "There are a few stories I've mentioned in the past that I planned and couldn't work into the comics," he said. "I don't want to spoil things, but it's possible there will be episodes in future seasons that are wholly original to the show and written by me. So the potential for that is very exciting for me."
Invincible Season 2 Gets a Release Window
Whether this includes Invincible's second season is currently unclear. Little is known about the animated adaptation's next batch of episodes, which is set to arrive at some point before the end of 2023. Prime Video announced Invincible Season 2's release window in January 2023, alongside the debut of its first teaser trailer. The teaser amounts to a single scene between Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogan), which sees the pair catch up over burgers.
This conversation includes a meta moment in which Grayson details the behind-the-scenes process of making Invincible itself, explaining the gap between the show's first and second seasons. Fortunately for fans, Invincible Seasons 2 and 3won't suffer the same delay, if previous comments by Black Samson voice actor Khary Payton are anything to go by. Payton revealed that production on the third season is already underway, although he also warned that post-pandemic animation studio backlogs make it hard to predict when these episodes will be finished.
Invincible Season 1 is currently streaming on Prime Video. Season 2 is slated for release on the platform in late 2023.
