James Gunn Explains Why Superman Probably Won't Undergo Reshoots

Reshoots have become common place in superhero movies. However, director James Gunn says his Superman movie will likely steer clear of the trend.

Gun made the revelation while answering fan questions on Threads. When asked how he avoids reshoots, the director offered a detailed explanation of his filming process. "[I] don't start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with," he said. "Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs. Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir, everything. Ask myself daily - are there any small imperfections in the script or what we're shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together?"

Gun recently confirmed that the highly anticipated Superman movie had completed filming. The filmmaker celebrated the occasion with a post on X which featured an image of him alongside, David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and other members of the crew. "God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn't always so much," he wrote in the caption.

Gun Is Grateful For The Team Behind The Film

"The goodness and kindness and love I've encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own," Gunn continued. "Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set - and for that I am forever grateful."

Per the official synopsis, "Superman tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

The cast includes Corenswet as Superman, Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Additional cast members include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Will Reeve, son of the deceased Superman actor Christopher Reeve, will have a small cameo role in the film. The actor's involvement was revealed after he was spotted on set.

Superman will be released in theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.
