Henry Cavill's suit got put through the wringer in an attempt to find the DCU's Supermanlead.
After a Threads user asked James Gunn to clarify whether Tom Brittney broke the DCEU Superman suit worn by Cavill while auditioning for Superman, the director confirmed that this story was, in fact, true. "Tom messed it up and then Corenswet came in [and] he was way too tall so it just got torn to shreds," Gunn said. However, the DC Studios co-CEO added that he doesn't blame Brittney for what happened, calling him "truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy" and confessing the audition suit "was an original that wasn’t in the best shape to begin with."
While Gunn completed filming on Superman in July, he also told fans that, despite recently working on Superman's first trailer, fans won't be seeing it until sometime next year. As the first live-action DCU release, Superman boasts a massive cast, with Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult joining Corenswet's Clark Kent as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor and other metahuman characters like Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner (played by Isabela Mercd and Nathan Fillion) set to make cameos. Frank Grillo will also appear as Rick Flag Sr., reprising his role from both the upcoming Creature Commandos animated series and Peacemaker season 2, the latter of which is set to debut a month after Superman's release.
James Gunn Has Hyped David Corenswet as the New Superman
Regarding the lead role, Gunn praised Corenswet's talents at a New York Comic Con panel, calling him "the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be. And I don't think anyone really understands the depth of this guy's talent, dramatically, comedically, he's the best physical action star I've probably ever worked with... He's an amazing actor, and Rachel Brosnahan, people are going to die for her as well."
Despite returning as Superman for Black Adam's post-credit scene, Cavill was ultimately let go from the DCEU as Warner Bros.' recent superhero movies The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom marked a final transition toward Gunn and Peter Safran's DC timeline. The actor did, however, briefly cameo as a "Cavillrine" variant in Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine, though director Shawn Levy admitted Cavill got sick the day after filming due to him keeping Wolverine's cigar in his mouth on-set.
Along with the Man of Steel, Superman will feature the debut of Superman's trusty canine Krypto the Super-Dog, while Milly Alcock will play Supergirl in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Other recent adaptations of the character include Superman & Lois -- which is currently airing its final season on The CW -- and My Adventures with Superman, whose third season is currently recording dialogue.
Superman releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.
