Jackie Chan & Ralph Macchio Team Up in New Karate Kid: Legends Trailer

Writer: Aaron FonsecaAaron Fonseca

A new trailer for Karate Kid: Legends has been released. The upcoming sequel sees the franchise unite Jackie Chan's Mr. Han with original franchise protagonist Daniel LaRusso, played by a returning Ralph Macchio.

Coming over three months after the first Karate Kid: Legends trailer, the new trailer spends the bulk of its 2-minute and 30-second runtime introducing audiences to the franchise's new Karate Kid, Li Fong, played by American Born Chinese star Ben Wang. Similar to both the original 1984 film and the 2010 remake (which is now canon to the Miyagiverse), Legends follows its protagonist as his life gets uprooted following a move to a new city. As Li struggles to settle into his new life in New York, he enters a karate competition despite only being skilled at kung fu. This leads Chan's Mr. Han, who trained Li in kung fu, to seek out Macchio's Daniel to help him train the next Karate Kid. Check out the new trailer below.

The original Karate Kid film was a major cultural phenomenon in the United States when it was released in 1984, grossing over $130 million worldwide. The success of the movie led to three sequels: The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994), the latter of which is the only entry in the original quadrilogy to not feature Macchio's Daniel LaRusso. After a 16-year hiatus, the franchise returned to the big screen in 2010 with the remake The Karate Kid, starring Chan and Jaden Smith.

While the 2010 movie was originally believed to be unconnected to the previous four entries and the legacy sequel series Cobra Kai, Karate Kid: Legends will retroactively add the remake to the Miyagiverse, a term coined by the creators of Cobra Kai to refer to any project in The Karate Kid franchise that featured Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi.

"Without giving too much away, I can say that Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi are the connection to Daniel. The Han family and the Miyagi family are connected all the way back to the old times. And there is a mention of this within the Karate Kid movie canon for those people who want to go looking for it," Legends director Jonathan Entwistle shared in December 2024, teasing that the upcoming sequel will reveal new details about both Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi's past.

The official synopsis for Karate Kid: Legends reads, "After a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn't want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren't enough. Li's kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown."

Who Else Stars in Karate Kid: Legends?

Besides Macchio, Chan, and Wang, Karate Kid: Legends stars Sadie Stanley as Li Fong's friend and love interest Mia, Joshua Jackson as her father Victor, Ming-Na Wen as Li Fong's mother, Shaunette Renée Wilson as Ms. Morgan, and Aramis Knight as Li Fong's nemesis Connor. Wyatt Oleff and Jennifer Lyn-Christie are also part of the cast, but their roles remain undisclosed at this time.

Karate Kid: Legends hits theaters on May 30.
