It appears Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones will be getting back to his Nazi-punching ways, based on the rumored plot for Indiana Jones 5.
The Illuminerdi has uncovered alleged story and character details for Indiana Jones 5, revealing the film will unfold against the backdrop of the 1960s Space Race between the U.S. and Soviet Union to reach the moon. Co-writer/director James Mangold previously hinted the fifth Indiana Jones movie would take place at least partly in '60s-era New York City.
What's more, The Illuminerdi has reported Indiana Jones 5 costar Mads Mikkelsen is set to play a Nazi scientist who's recruited by the U.S. government to work for NASA, possibly as part of Operation Paperclip -- a real-life secret intelligence operation where the U.S. hired over 1,600 Nazi engineers and technicians following the end of World War II. Shaunette Renee Wilson, who recently joined the film's cast, will play the CIA handler tasked with keeping a close eye on Mikkelsen's Nazi villain. The latter will also have a woman sidekick in the form of "an evil and brutal killer" who has yet to be cast (although Scarlett Johansson supposedly passed on the role).
Mikkelsen, who's infamous for playing antagonists in films like Casino Royale and Doctor Strange, has already confirmed his casting for Indiana Jones 5 and offered high praise for the script, which Mangold co-penned with his Ford v. Ferrari screenwriters Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. "[There] is kind of a genre mix in Indiana Jones always," he added, suggesting that will continue to be the case with the latest installment.
Whereas Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) pitted Indy against the Nazis, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) saw him take on an underground cult in India. Decades later, 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had the bullwhip-cracking archaeologist battle Soviet agents in a race to recover a crystal skull belonging to a race of alien-like inter-dimensional beings. An homage to classic sci-fi B-movies like War of the Worlds (1953), the film was a box office success, but received a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences.
Directed by James Mangold and written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, Indiana Jones 5 stars Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook and Shaunette Renée Wilson. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
