Channing Tatum has been trying to get his Gambit movie for years. He finally got to portray the character in Deadpool & Wolverine and now Ryan Reynolds said he'd do anything to help him if he gets the movie, even return as Deadpool.
Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum have many things in common. Both waited a long time to get their superhero characters up on the big screen, Deadpool and Gambit, although Reynolds had more success with that. Reynolds advocated for a long time to get a Deadpool movie, and he recently premiered the third film starring the Merc with a Mouth after the 2016 and 2018 films. Unfortunately, Tatum isn't as lucky and spoke on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon about how long he's tried to get it going, and Reynolds gave him his full support on social media.
"It's impossible not to love and root for [Channing Tatum]," Reynolds wrote on his Instagram Stories on top of a reel from Tatum's appearance on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "I'm so happy for this guy," he continued. He previously shared he wants "more" of Tatum's Gambit.
"When he makes a Gambit movie, I'll return the favor. If he needs someone to carry sandbags, I'm in. If he needs a Deadpool, I can do that. Someone to provide fresh orange slices to the crew, no problem. Name it."
During the interview, Tatum addressed his recent critically acclaimed Gambit portrayal in Deadpool & Wolverine, "I could cry. Actually, I could get really emotional because I've trying to, actively in the industry, to play that character for the last 20 years." He recalled being in "third grade, throwing playing cards at my friends in the living room."
Channing Tatum Explained Gambit's Rocky Road
Channing Tatum was originally supposed to have his standalone Gambit movie but it all started when the characters still belonged to Fox. With Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019, the project was delayed and, eventually, shelved. So far, there are no official plans for a Gambit movie, but the current press the character is getting thanks to Deadpool & Wolverinecouldn't hurt its chances.
"It was at Fox first and I worked on it for like six years trying to get the standalone to happen," Tatum explained. "And then, right like on the 1-yard line, we were about to make the movie and then Fox got bought by Disney. And like Kevin [Feige] was like 'Look, I love Gambit, I just don't know how to do it right now. I don't know how he fits into what we're doing.'"
The actor continued on a hopeful note, "Now we sort of cracked a little bit of the code, and hopefully..." Asked if he would do the film, Tatum joked, "I would kill kittens. I would do lots of terrible things to make that happen." He also had nothing but praise for Reynolds, "I can honestly say that not one single person is just more of a class act and care more than that man. He took Gambit out of truly, the grave. I'll forever be grateful to him."
Deadpool & Wolverine, which recently passed the $1 billion mark, is currently out in theaters.
