'I Think I Might': Gwyneth Paltrow Addresses Chances of MCU Return

Writer: Aaron FonsecaAaron Fonseca

Acclaimed actor Gwyneth Paltrow seems more open to a Marvel Cinematic Universe return after somewhat distancing herself from the superhero genre since her last appearance. The Oscar winner claims she "might" make an MCU comeback, but "nothing is confirmed" yet.

Speaking during a live Instagram Q&A session with fans, Paltrow addressed the potential of returning to the MCU for the first time since featuring in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. When asked by one fan if she's coming back to Marvel, Paltrow stated she could reappear as Pepper Potts if the right opportunity comes along. “The truth is, I don’t totally know,” Paltrow said. “I think I might, but I’m not sure. Nothing is confirmed. That is the truth. That’s the inside scoop.”

Paltrow played Potts, the love interest and business secretary for Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man, showing undeniable chemistry with her fellow Academy Award winner. Though she doesn't talk with her former co-star as much these days, Paltrow insists they're still close and hopes to share a screen with him again. “Not every day, but we talk a lot. And you know what? He’s going to turn 60 years old on April 4. I’m most probably going to call him that day,” she said.

Paltrow's Potts appeared in seven MCU films throughout her tenure, including the Iron Mantrilogy, three Avengers films and Spider-Man: Homecoming, a fact she recently admitted she was oblivious to. Since Endgame, Paltrow hadn't been following Marvel too much amid an acting hiatus, choosing to focus more on her Goop brand and other ventures. However, she suggested that if she returned, it would be because of Downey Jr.'s involvement. Downey Jr. returned to the MCU last summer, but not as the beloved Stark. Instead, he'll be portraying the villainous intellect, Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, in the upcoming Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars, a move that stunned many, including Paltrow.

Insider reports recently surfaced that Paltrow could feature in Doomsday, reuniting with Downey Jr. Should she return to the MCU, it would be a part of a to-do list for Paltrow before bowing out of Hollywood as she's laid out her exit plan from the acting world.

Will Pepper Potts Return in the MCU?

Though time will tell if her MCU return happens, Paltrow has since returned to acting, appearing alongside Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet in the A24 sports comedy-drama film, Marty Supreme. The Josh Safdie-helmed movie, set for a Christmas Day release, also features Tyler, The Creator, Kevin O'Leary and Fran Drescher.

Fans can stream all of Paltrow's MCU offerings via Disney+.
