Deadpool & Wolverine was filled with meaningful cameos, but one of the most exciting ones was Channing Tatum's Gambit. However, his giving his all to the character resulted in many funny moments on set that made other actors break character.
Channing Tatum was supposed to have his own solo Gambit movie at Fox, but after several delays, the project was shelved. So, he knew he only had one shot to make his mark as Remy Lebeau aka Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, Dafne Keen, who reprised her role from 2017's Logan as Laura/ X-23, revealed that Channing Tatum's exploring the character also caused many bloopers.
"I had to tell him that, on my shot, he couldn't say his lines," Keen explained. "I kept breaking character because I was doing my brooding Wolverine vibe. I was like, 'Yeah, let's fucking go. And then he'd be like, 'I was laying my nut in my buttery...' 'No, shut up. I need to do my job over here. You're making it so hard.'"
On my shot, he couldn't say his lines.
"But he's so good," Keen continued. "Even the formation when he's like, 'I'm about to make a name for myself.' I was like, 'No.' Again, I'm calm and collected and this guy is just like yapping in my ear. He's also, he's right in front of me and it's a full frontal shot. You can probably see it somewhere, [me] dying."
Channing Tatum Earned High Praise for His Gambit Portrayal From His Co-Stars
Ryan Reynolds, who plays Wade Wilson aka Deadpool, and the film's director, Shawn Levy, worked hard to bring everyone together, as Hugh Jackman rounded up the Golden Trio as he reprised his role as Wolverine. Deadpool & Wolverine featured many exciting cameos, and among them was Tatum's Gambit, who finally got a chance to act out his dream role. As Reynolds and Levy took turns thanking every actor who played a part in Deadpool & Wolverine, both were excited for Tatum's Gambit. Tatum himself expressed his gratitude for the two, explaining how Reynolds fought for him to have his shot at the character.
"Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play," Reynolds said. "His story is similar to my road on Deadpool — in that Chan spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. Some characters can only exist with a one in a billion pairing and this is it. Gambit found his author in Chan. He’s one of the coolest, smartest characters in Comics and still largely unexplored. Reynolds couldn't help but wish he could see more of Tatum's Gambit. "I want more — and from what I saw in theaters, you do too."
Levy explained, "Years ago, I was one of many directors who met with [Channing Tatum] about making a GAMBIT movie. It didn't happen then, for me or for Chan, but I'm eternally grateful we got another chance." He doubled down on Reynolds' comments, noting that, "Channing was BORN to play this iconic character, and while I'd love to take credit for his hilarious, charismatic, badass performance in [Deadpool & Wolverine], I was mostly the lucky sonofabitch who had a front row seat to watch Destiny happen."
Deadpool & Wolverine is out in theaters.
