After a successful theatrical run, The Wild Robot is about to embark on the second stage of its life as an awards darling. The Wild Robotpicked up four nominations for Best Animated Feature Film, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Original Song ("Kiss the Sky"), and Best Original Score. With just four nominations, The Wild Robot has become the most-nominated animated film ever at the Golden Globes. Peter Brown, whose 2016 novel of the same name serves as the basis for the animated movie, reacted to the news on the social media platform X, writing, "Amazing! But I’m not surprised. The team at [DreamWorks] did an incredible job adapting my book into a gorgeous, powerful film."
Directed by Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot follows Roz (Lupita Nyong'o), a service robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island who must adapt to her surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife, and become the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose, Brightbill (Kit Connor). The voice cast for the animated movie also includes Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.
Released in theaters in September 2024, The Wild Robot quickly wormed its way into the hearts of audiences around the world. The Wild Robot 2 Is on the Way
Following the critical and commercial success of The Wild Robot, Sanders announced in October 2024 that "100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one." Although unconfirmed, it is expected that the animated sequel will adapt the second novel in Brown's Wild Robot trilogy, The Wild Robot Escapes.
The Wild Robot won't be the only DreamWorks Animation sequel to hit theaters over the next few years. The studio recently unveiled the first trailer for The Bad Guys 2, an upcoming sequel to its 2022 hit, The Bad Guys. In the sequel, per the official synopsis, the "now-reformed Bad Guys are trying (very, very hard) to be good, but instead find themselves hijacked into a high-stakes, globe-trotting heist, masterminded by a new team of criminals they never saw coming: The Bad Girls."
DreamWorks has also announced that the long-awaited Shrek 5 will be hitting theaters in 2026. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will all be returning to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona in the sequel, which will be the first new Shrekmovie in over 15 years (excluding the two Puss in Boots spinoff movies that were released in 2011 and 2022).
The Wild Robot is still playing in theaters. The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards airs on CBS on Jan. 5, 2025.
