'I'll Give That Away': Jenna Ortega Confirms Beetlejuice 2 Role

Fonseca will be back with new show and more in March:

Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega has also been cast in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and she just confirmed her upcoming role.

Jenna Ortega's lead role in Wednesday in the Netflix spinoff series about the Addams Family character led to a different Tim Burton collaboration. Burton, who was a director and producer on the Netflix series, was also busy directing a sequel to his 1988 cult favorite horror comedy Beetlejuice. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jenna Ortega confirmed she will be playing the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Beetlejuice character, Lydia Deetz.

Ortega's career has included several horror films besides her lead role in Netflix's hit series, Wednesday. She's been in the critically acclaimed X, and starred in two Scream films before her Scream 7 exit following Melissa Barrera's firing. In the Beetlejuice sequel, Ortega detailed that she plays Ryder's character Lydia Deetz's daughter, Astrid.

"I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I am Lydia Deetz’s daughter, so I’ll give that away. She’s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume, I would say. The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again."

Ortega, who proclaimed herself a fan of the first film, added that, "for me, Lydia is the coolest ever. So then to play her daughter and also have to be like, 'Mom…,' and roll your eyes was definitely more challenging for me as an actor, but super fun to play."

The actress also described her character as not "bright and sunny at all. She doesn’t go to the opposite end of the spectrum, but any kid who becomes a teenager wants to be removed from their parents. I think they instantly just fight whatever it is that their parent loves. So I think it’s a little bit of that. I’m not wearing pink and a cheerleader, but I am a little bit against my mom’s history or past. We butt heads quite a bit."

The Upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Will Still Be Set In Winter River

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will still be located in the fictional village of Winter River, Connecticut, Jenna Ortega revealed. "They rebuilt Winter River, which was insane. All of the locals were so excited. But we were able to finish all of our Winter River stuff so that when the strike hit, they could take it all down." The scenes were actually set in East Corinth, a village in Corinth, Vermont.

Ortega continued, "I remember it being super-weird energy on set the last week. For a lot of the cast that was revisiting Vermont, it felt weird to rush such a sentimental moment for them, seeing that house again and being together and calling each other by the same names again. But for the most part, up until the very last day, I feel like the shoot was a celebration of everyone being back together and doing practical effects again. It was probably the happiest I had ever seen Tim on a set, where he’s clapping at the monitor and shouting and laughing, which was really, really endearing."

Aside from Ortega and Ryder, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will bring back Michael Keaton as the title character, as well as Catherine O'Hara as Delia.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be out in theaters on September 6, 2024.
